Portal North Bridge Replacement
This project replaces the existing movable bridge, built in 1910, over the Hackensack River with a high-level fixed-span tied-arch bridge, eliminating marine-related rail service interruptions. The new structure will rise more than 50 feet above the river and will be one of the first network tied-arch rail bridges in the United States. The overall project extends approximately 2.5 miles along the Northeast Corridor and includes approach structures, track realignment, and supporting rail infrastructure improvements. The bridge replacement removes conflicts with maritime traffic, improves reliability, and enables higher train speeds.
