Sawtooth Bridges Replacement
The Project will eliminate a major bottleneck on Amtrak’s Northeast
Corridor by replacing more than a mile of aging viaducts in Kearny, NJ,
originally constructed in 1907. The multi-phase project will deliver new
multi-track bridges (Tracks 1–5) to expand capacity and enhance service
reliability for Amtrak, NJ TRANSIT, PATH, and Conrail, all of which
operate through the area. The scope includes early action work such as
fiber optic and gas utility relocation, access road improvements, catenary
relocations, and surcharge operations. Major structural phases involve
construction of multiple new viaduct bridges, approach trackwork,
undertrack bridges, retaining walls, interlockings, and demolition of the
existing structures. The final phase will complete full viaduct replacement,
restoring all operational capacity while upgrading drainage, electrical, and
communication systems. Key challenges include maintaining
uninterrupted rail traffic in a highly congested, multioperator corridor while
coordinating phased bridge replacement, utility relocations, signal
modernization, and complex civil construction.
